The Garden Queen

I've been playing the Mississippi John Hurt tune My Creole Belle for 5 or 6 years on the dobro. This demo recording is my attempt at reworking the melody in a different style of music (swirly electric guitar with mellotron!) with the addition of some new lyrics.  This one goes out to Josephine Burr.

My Josephine
The garden queen
Her flowers blooming
The weeds so green

A season turns
Fires burn
Our star is shining
My Josephine

Here's an original tune I recorded with the AKE Trio back in January. I finally just got around to mixing it.

This is for all you meditators out there.

AKE Trio: Andrew Innes - guitar & vocals, Kim Patch - violin, Eric Smalley - upright bass

Pearly Pearly Pearly

Blargh.  I've been at this tune for a long time. Made three versions over the last couple years. Not happy with any of them but they all have their moments.  Letting go of them for now and will probably revisit sometime later.

Pearly Blue (sometimes called Down the Road) is an old Flatt & Scruggs tune which I learned while playing with The Bootleg Remedy back in NYC. It's been a favorite of mine since back then.

The first version below was recorded in a gymnasium (lots of natural reverb) with a single microphone. I love the endless quality of this version, especially with Kim's fiddle playing. It's like the tune is infinitely long and we just get this small 2-minute window to catch a glimpse as it goes by.  The 2nd and 3rd versions were recorded at home.

2 - Andrew Innes: Guitar, lapsteel, harp & vocals

3 - Andrew Innes: Guitar, dobro, harp & vocals
